Safety Considerations to Impart to Your Babysitter

May 31, 2010 by admin

When you hire a babysitter, you have to consider a worst case scenario. Sure, you’ll only be gone for an afternoon or night, or even just a few hours, but the unexpected is always waiting to happen. This is why it is very important to hire a babysitter whom you think is ready to handle an emergency or a difficult situation in your absence, and is able to keep your children safe.

Of course, you can’t expect every babysitter to know instinctively what to do. If your sitter is a teenager, she may have had no personal experience in dealing with emergencies. You should do your part and guide them.
First of all, consider health emergencies. Make sure you have the hospital or ambulance number listed near the phone, where she can see it. Also make sure that your medicine cabinet is stocked. Let her know where that is, as well as the first aid kid. Your child may have a condition like asthma. Tell your babysitter what to do in case of an attack.

Then, consider a scenario in which an intruder penetrates your house. If there is a burglar alarm, let her know where it is. Show her the panic room if there is one, and make sure she knows the number for the police department.

In case of fire, let her know where the fire exits and extinguisher are. She should have the number for the fire department as well. Tell her basic considerations as well, such as avoiding breathing in the noxious fumes, and rolling in a blanket if one accidentally gets set on fire. Stress that there is to be no smoking in the house and teach her the proper use of the stove or oven.

If she has gone through disaster preparedness training, it is a bonus. If not, give her some background on what to do in case of typhoons, blackouts, floods, or earthquakes. If you have battery-operated emergency lights, charge them and let her know where you keep them.

It may seem pessimistic, but it is always best to be ready. You might be thankful that you reviewed these things with a babysitter- it might make that little necessary difference that brought about your child’s survival.

Patented Internal Vent System
Eliminates the negative pressure and excess air ingestion
The patented Natural Flow internal vent system is the only vent that eliminates the vacuum and the air bubbles found in most baby bottles. It allows air to enter through the nipple collar without being incorporated into the breast milk or formula.
The air is then channeled though the internal vent system to the area above the breast milk or formula.
Babies feed more comfortably because the vent allows them to nurse without fighting the negative effects of a vacuum or the discomfort of ingesting air bubbles. This helps to reduce colic, spit-up, burping and gas.
The breast milk or formula flows freely through the nipples as the air is channeled to the top of the bottle. This positive pressure eliminates nipple collapse, and can help reduce build up of fluid in baby’s ear.
Unique internal vent eliminates the vacuum and air bubbles to help reduce colic, spit-up, burping and gas
By eliminating the negative pressure, it can help reduce build up of fluid in baby’s ear
Positive-pressure design mimics breastfeeding and is ideal for breast milk and formula alike

“Good venting, baby loves them”
By Cassidy’s mom (Huntington Beach, CA United States)
We used a combination of the Playtex Ventaire and Dr. Brown’s during the last 3 weeks with our newborn. After several nights of her spitting up and fussing when fed with the Ventaire bittles, we switched exclusively to Dr. Brown’s. So far, so good – the baby is feeding without incident and because the vent is through the middle of the bottle versus at the bottom like on the Ventaire (where it can stick if not dried thoroughly after washing), the bottle vents well. The only difficult aspect of the bottles is the multiple pieces to wash/put together each time – but this is the beneficial design, so it appears to be worth the effort.

“Great pack of baby bottles.”
By Loryale T. Gaffney (NY)
These are a great set of bottles. The main reason to get these bottles is because of the stopper and nipple. The stopper and nipple keeps the milk from squirting out. Even when you squeeze the bottle the milk barely comes out. So that leaves the only way for the milk to flow out is by massaging the nipple. My daughter almost never chokes on these bottles because of how it controls the flow of milk. It only happens when she drinks too fast or if I feed her with a regular bottle that doesn’t have the stopper in it.

The set comes with enough bottles that I probably wouldn’t need a second pack because of how easy they are to clean. I’ll get a new one any since they’re at a great price and allow me to feed my child without having to worry about her having problems like overflow, or bubbles and such.

A Guide to Baby Teething Rings

May 26, 2010 by admin

Teething can be stressful for you and your baby. As your baby’s teeth pushes against and out of his or her gums, the pressure that results can sometimes be painful. What results is a baby trying to put various objects in his or her mouth in an attempt to relieve the pressure. This is where baby teething rings come in.

A teething ring can be made out of metal, plastic, or rubber. It’s basically a chew toy for your infant, especially made for the purpose of teething alone. When your baby undergoes this “rite of passage”, this can provide the greatest possible relief. You can tell when teething is starting when he or she begins to gnaw at pretty much anything – including you. Loss of appetite is also a telltale sign as chewing can be troublesome. Once you notice these behaviors, it’s time to go shopping for a baby teething ring.

The advantage of a metal teething ring is that it’s quicker to chill in the refrigerator. These can be most soothing to the baby’s gums. Metal is also virtually unbreakable – meaning it’s less likely that Junior would chew it to pieces. Plastic teething rings come with the most variety in terms of color and design. On the other hand, the paint used to color plastic could sometimes contain harmful chemicals such as lead. Make sure that what you’re giving your child is safe to put in his or her mouth. Rubber teething rings are safer than plastic and less likely to contain chemicals. These are the most commonly used because they’re neither hard nor soft. However, any signs of deterioration should be enough for you to throw it out. Many teething rings have bumps or ridges that allow for a more “thorough” chewing.

A good rule of thumb for deciding which baby teething ring to buy is its simplicity. The simpler the teething ring, the better. Bells and whistles attached are at risk of falling apart, and worse, being ingested by your baby.

Once you’ve made your purchase, it’s important that you take some necessary precautions to keep it safe. Always wash rings after use to avoid getting contaminated by germs or bacteria. Never boil your rings as they may affect the chemical composition it’s made up of, possibly poisoning your child. Don’t freeze them either – extremely low temperatures can lead to breakage the next time your baby gnaws at it. If your ring holds water, always check for any leakages and throw it away if it does. Never tie rings around a baby’s neck as it may cause strangulation. And finally, it is not a good idea to share your child’s baby teething ring with others as much as it’s unhygienic to share a toothbrush.

Baby Sleeping Through Night

A lot of mothers and fathers wonder what are the greatest methods that will aid baby sleep through night occasions and if there are any certain suggestions or tricks that will assist.

I’ll commence by saying there is no definable “trick” but there are definite strategies which will aid your baby sleep through the night.

The reason for performing this is to support the infant get applied to sleeping on their personal and that crying will not draw your interest which may possibly instill bad habits. We do not recommend this as there may be times when your child genuinely wants you.

2. Managed Crying: Controlled crying, as opposed to the cry it out method, is much more far more managed in that you as a parent, understand what cries ought to warrant your interest. This will demand you to realize no matter whether the infant is distressed and definitely wants your aid, or whether the infant is crying for attention. You will clearly have to have to realize your little one in order to understand controlled crying but some points to take into account would be the pitch as nicely as whether or not the cry is constant or not. A constant cry is most most likely a cry for concern as opposed to interval crying typically connected with interest crying. But as usually, we do advise you consult your medical specialist in purchase to get a far better understanding.

3. No Crying at all. Some mother and father, in fact most mom and dad use this procedure to aid their baby sleep through night. Generally its simply because they can’t stand the sound of their child crying. This is much more tough for the parent in the prolonged run as your baby will tend to cry a lot more due to some behavioral conditioning but it works in the sense that when the baby is relieved and set into a location of comfort they usually go back to slumber shortly after.

Baby Rooms-Dressers and Armoires

May 24, 2010 by admin

When deciding on a dresser style, think not only about how much space you have but also about what you will put in it and how a child will use it. It will be used much longer than the crib, so choose with an eye to the future. You may even want to buy this piece at an “adult” furniture store. You can also get an inexpensive dresser at an unfinished furniture store, then paint or stain it to match your crib or other furniture you may already have chosen. Spend a little extra on unique knobs, and you’ll have a custom piece for a fraction of the price.

A low, double-wide bureau is a wise choice, as all the drawers are easy-access by age three (with the aid of a small step stool), when most kids start wanting to dress themselves. A highboy makes sense only if you are short on floor space and want to store things out of your child’s reach; make sure any tall dresser is securely anchored to the wall.

Think about how the dresser will function in the future. Some models are part of a set that allows you to add a hutch on top or a corner shelf unit (also called a “radius shelf”‘) on either side. Your child’s storage needs will only grow, so plan accordingly.

Armoires are an increasingly popular choice; in the baby years, the top cupboard is outfitted with a pole to hang small dresses or jackets, while the lower drawers store the rest of the clothes and blankets. Some parents start out with shelves in the top portion, leave the doors open, and use it as a display area for the baby’s treasures. Later, the cupboard can store collections, books, or even a television.

Safety considerations include the obvious—is it sturdy and free of sharp edges?—and the not so obvious—are the drawer knobs or handles easy for small hands to get a grip on? Gliders or center guides will make drawers slide in and out more smoothly, making it easier for preschoolers to dress themselves and put away their clothes. Drawers that are heavy and quick to shut, however, are a recipe for pinched fingers. If your toddler is a climber, put safety locks on the drawers, or they may be used as steps (another reason to anchor the dresser to the wall). Finally, ensure that the drawers can’t be removed altogether, or a toddler may end up pulling one out on top of him.

Other items you may want to save space for in your child’s room: a small table and chair set (it will be appreciated by 18 months of age), a miniature armchair for “reading” (even one-year olds love to imitate Mom and Dad), and a nightstand for next to the rocking chair (until the “big bed” comes along).
